Student Responsibilities whilst on the Dispensing Optician or Contact Lens Course

Expectations and Responsibilities

The courses offered by ABDO College are designed to allow students the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge across a number of different areas and topics. The combination of distance learning, teaching on residential blocks, access to personal tutors and a supervisor in practice should cater for all learning styles and needs. Support is consistently available to students throughout the various programs however; ABDO College has certain expectations of students in return.

  • Students should be self-motivated and take ownership of their progression through the course.
  • There should be a drive for self-improvement at each and every stage of the program.
  • Students need to be aware that support is readily available; however, guidance should be sought once understanding of a topic has been attempted independently. Tutors and supervisors act as guides rather than teaching concepts from scratch.
  • Good time management is key for a successful journey through the courses. Supervisors should be regularly checking in with students to monitor progress, however, the responsibility for ensuring timely submission of coursework lies with the student themselves.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to inform ABDO College and ABDO Examinations, separately, of any change of supervisor as a matter of urgency. Failure to do so could lead to invalid case records/hours logging.
  • All students must comply with the GOC Code of Conduct, ABDO and ABDO College policies and all laws associated with the courses.
