Practical Optical Dispensing

£57.00

(3rd edition)

David Wilson PhD BEc BA(Hons) DipEd and Steven Daras BEd

641 pages, plus many diagrams and a USB flash drive

Although this is an Australian title the content is valid for the UK

Practical Optical Dispensing covers the practical skills and knowledge needed for the practising optical dispenser. It assumes and builds on the theoretical knowledge of the dispenser or the theory subjects in the student’s course. The student should find the whole book invaluable, particularly when preparing for tests. The practising optical dispenser or optometrist, on the other hand, will find those parts of the book that cover unusual prescriptions of most use. While Practical Optical Dispensing will be used as a reference book for the optical dispensing course it is also intended to be used by practising optical dispensers and optometrists who dispense their own prescriptions. The book has significant sections on dispensing atypical prescriptions, such as aphakic prescriptions and iseikonic lenses; and special needs dispensing, such as paediatric spectacles and low-vision aids.  All readers will, I hope, find the glossary and the section on optical terminology useful. Whilst not a comprehensive dictionary, the glossary does cover most of the common terms in our field (480 terms an extra 130 from the previous edition). The last chapter of the book also has a comprehensive list of formulae for the optical dispenser.

Features include:

  • Practical approach to frame and lens types, including client benefits
  • A detailed description of the function of focimeters
  • Comparisons of fitting methods, including progressive lenses
  • Atypical and special needs dispensing, low vision aids, protective spectacles, high powered lenses and prisms
  • Adjustment tips and a checklist for problem solving
  • Discussion of problem solving methods and client interaction
  • Review of technical jargon and confusing terminology
  • Comprehensive list of formulae for the optical dispenser
  • Worked examples for calculations

New to the third edition:

  • USB flash drive with new video and interactive demonstrations
  • Updates on recent changes to lens and frame materials and lens types
  • Expanded sections on the focimeter and lens treatments
  • An expanded section on frame manipulation
  • An expanded glossary (with over 480 terms)
