Become a distance learning tutor with ABDO College

Applications now open

ABDO College is excited to announce a new recruitment window for those looking to become distance learning tutors to support our students from introductory optical assistant courses through to the level 6 FBDO and contact lens diploma programmes. Becoming a distance learning tutor initially is also required for anyone looking to join the ABDO College team of apprenticeship coaches in future.

As a distance learning tutor, you will be a valuable source of advice and guidance for students when completing their studies. This takes the form of assisting with queries on the course topics themselves, marking and providing feedback on submissions, signposting and providing support where appropriate in a pastoral capacity. You will need to have excellent time management and communication skills as well as a thorough understanding of the FBDO syllabus and topics. You will need to be regularly contactable by students and respond to queries quickly.

Who can apply

You will be fully FBDO qualified and GOC registered. Applications from those with contact lens and/or low vision speciality qualifications are particularly welcome.

How does training work?

The tutor training programme starts in the first week of January, lasts 6 weeks to begin with and includes written assignments around the elements of supporting students and feedback, online interactive sessions, regular marking tasks and a flipped classroom session to demonstrate communication skills and ability to explain optical concepts to learners.

Trainee tutors have the support of a senior tutor to act as their mentor and aid their development throughout the programme. These senior tutors are well experienced in the field and are ideally placed to help new trainees flourish in this new role

Following on directly from successful completion of this course, trainees then move on to marking students under mentored conditions, where their feedback and marking is quality assured by their senior tutor mentor before being formally returned. This process is undertaken at each academic level of marking.

How to apply

In order to ensure that applicants have a good understanding of the FBDO syllabus, we require a short assignment to be completed and submitted as part of the application, along with a full CV (including 2 employer references and clear explanation of any gaps in employment) as well as a covering letter explaining why you feel you would be suitable for the role.

The deadline for applications is the 1 December 2025 with an internal selection process to follow in the following fortnight
