Meet an apprenticeship coach: Kevin Gutsell FBDO

Kevin is the President of ABDO. He has a 40-year career in dispensing optics, and has been a tutor since 1992. He’s worked in practice, teaching, sales, manufacturing and as a UK distributor for an Italian company. Now he’s taking on the role of coach for apprentices studying to become dispensing opticians.

How do you see the role of apprenticeship coach?

A coach is central in supporting the apprentice throughout their journey. The coach carries out periodic reviews and provides pastoral support.

Why should people choose apprenticeships?

As a coach I can honestly say that this route to qualifying is the best supported route in so many ways.

What do you hope to achieve as an educator?

To see first-rate qualified individuals, who then have the options to be great dispensing opticians (DOs) with further ambitions.

How can learners make a success of their studies?

Apprentices have protected hours which means they have dedicated work time in which to complete course work. Does it make it easier? No. Does it give better structure, engagement and support? Yes.

Is there anything they should avoid?

Leaving things to the last minute, failing to prepare and losing sight of the roadmap to qualification.

What’s the best day you’ve had as a coach?

The best and most memorable days are when a struggling learner suddenly gets it.

What have your students gone on to do?

Some of my previous students now own their own practices, some work in sales, some are optometrists or lecturers and a number have spent time on the Board of ABDO.

What have you learned from your students?

Being a part of new learners keeps you young and I’m so proud to have played a small part in developing the DO leaders of tomorrow.

What’s your message to learners?

Never give up because it’s worth it. Never forget that we’ve all been there and with the support of your employer, supervisor and coach, you will make it.
