Meet the trustees at 100% Optical

Come along to the ABDO College stand at 100% Optical this weekend to meet the trustees and find out more about getting involved with the home of education in dispensing optics.

We are looking for ABDO members who want to help guide the development of student dispensing opticians. Could you play a part in ensuring there’s a bright future for our profession by joining the board of trustees? Graduates of ABDO College and former apprentices are especially welcome. 

Chair of trustees and former ABDO president Daryl Newsome says these are “rewarding positions, giving trustees a close up view of how a training institute works and how the finances work. It gives us an opportunity to challenge the senior management on their strategies and ensure good governance is in place. 

“It is not about micro-managing but more about making sure the college is well run and compliant with standard policies and procedures.

“We would like to strengthen our core by finding people from the industry side of the profession and some with a good understanding of apprenticeships and how they work. The role is not onerous on time and where needed training is recommended and signposted.”

ABDO College trustees meet formally four times a year. Often half the meetings are online and half face-to-face. They are responsible for agreeing the College’s annual budget and accounts, and for receiving reports from senior staff. The role is voluntary. 

You can meet the trustees at 11.30–12.30 on Saturday and Sunday at our stand, D60. Daryl will be there on Saturday. ABDO vice-president and trustee Brenda Rennie will be available on Sunday.
