 - ABDO College

Meet Rebecca Weston FBDO, training manager at Lynne Fernandes Optometrists

Why did you choose the apprenticeship pathway?

We heard that ABDO were launching an apprenticeship programme for 2024 intake, and as a forward-thinking independent group we already had an OA who was interesting in becoming a DO. We ultimately decided upon the apprenticeship route to help with the funding aspect of the course fees.

What attracted you to choose ABDO College?

As a DO myself, I studied and qualified with ABDO College in 2010. I absolutely loved my time as a trainee DO and loved the mix of distance learning and block release. I always recommend ABDO College as a great route into becoming a DO to those interested.

How has working with the ABDO College DO Apprenticeship benefitted your practice?

There is much more online involvement to the course since my time as an ABDO College student, but this flexibility including the online videos and E-books is great.

The course combines theory and practical skills, which is hugely beneficial to the student and our practice. We can explore all of the new theory knowledge from assignments and block release, then practice those skills, and turn it into real life learning for becoming a DO! This benefits the student, their colleagues and our patients.

With the government funding towards the course fees, we have also made some financial savings whilst being able to support an employee through a desired career path!

Top tips for future apprentices…

Use your study day wisely and keep on top of your assignments and reading.

Enjoy the course and make lifelong friends!

Ensure you transfer your theory knowledge into practical skills.
