Record numbers for ABDO College new Optical Assistant course

The new Optical Assistant course from ABDO College has started with record numbers joining to develop their knowledge with online study and practical workshops.

ABDO College Head of Operations Steve Hertz says, “We’re delighted to welcome over 80 new students onto this course which is suitable for people who have just started working in optics, as well as those who have been in practice for some time and want to formalise their knowledge. It is great to see employers have responded to the new course structure by signing up their employees. It seems that the combination on online learning, practical skills to develop in practice, and workshops for key skills have had exactly the appeal we hoped for.”

The new students will get weekly modules to work through online and in practice, giving them a vital induction into optical education. Students’ knowledge of frames and lenses will grow, allowing them to develop what they can offer patients with growing confidence and knowledge. Each student is supported by an individual tutor support to ensure success. They have the option to take part in workshops on repairs and pre-screening at the National Resource Centre in Birmingham. These workshops are included in the course but are optional for those who want to develop pre-screening and repair skills in practice instead.

Steve Hertz continues, “This new course emphasises in-practice tasks and practical workshops. It provides a firm foundation for people to progress to the level 4 Senior Optical Assistant and Optical Technician courses as well as courses in ophthalmic dispensing and we hope to see many of those who are taking the course this year continue their studies.” In response to student and employer feedback the new Optical Assistant course is evaluated by continuous assessment. There are no examinations and no examination fees, but the robust continuous assessment and workshops ensure that every student who completes the course is a high calibre asset to any optical practice.

The course lasts 25 weeks and costs £795. It is the perfect way to combine study with a full time job. It is open to all, regardless of prior qualifications. You can apply now for a January start.
