Being able to creatively and constructively critique anything placed before you is perhaps what distinguishes the good graduates from the average. Specific advice about how to develop this critical skill is hard to find. This book explains and demonstrates 13 different stances from which to undertake a critique. The intent is to underline the need to think as much as much about the stance from which the critique is to be made as what is to be critiqued. By applying the methods discussed in this book, students will become more confident in creative critique. Each chapter contains sample passages, examples of critiques and explanations of the different stances which include argument, systems thinking, picturing and metaphors. Reading Critically at University will develop the thinking skills of undergraduates and postgraduates in most disciplines including social inquiry, the humanities and business studies by providing creative suggestions for undertaking assignments that ask for some work to be critiques. It will also be an excellent resource for undergraduate study skills modules.
